Great. There's a Bear in My Backyard.

My 11-year-old was sitting in the family room when a black bear ambled past the windows. He literally sauntered on by.That bear took his ever-loving sweet time strolling behind our house. In fact, he stopped and peered in at my daughter, who was stretched out on the couch, reading the second book in the Hunger Games trilogy that she just checked out from the library.

You might think a young girl would run out of the room, screaming for her mother to save her. My Alaskan kid didn't even bother rolling off the sofa. She just hollered, "Mom! You better get your camera! There's a black bear looking in the window!" and went back to her book. I guess Katniss and her killing games make a bear looking through the window seem tame.

By the time I entered the room, fumbling with my camera, the big fur ball had already moved past the house into the backyard. So, here's a picture of his rear-end. You're welcome.

He headed up the path to the treehouse, and walked by the area where the kids jump onto their zipline.

Needless to say, the girls won't be allowed to play outside today. Unless they take their bows and arrows.

Just when I was getting used to your moose pics! I saw this post, squealed, and called my husband over: "Wanna see a black bear in someone's backyard?" He was pretty darn impressed. And I think archery lessons for the girls might be a good idea.

In past summers, we've found scat on the lawn and we've heard from neighbors when they've spied a bear in the area, but this is the first time I've seen one with my own eyes in broad daylight strolling through our yard like he hadn't a care in the world.

That's frightening. They are cute and everything but they have big teeth.

My husband grew up in Montana, and there were bears every where! I was also so afraid of them. However, I have never actually seen one in the wild myself. I still really want to do that - just not in my yard.

That scares me! We see some bears in Mammoth Lakes each summer and I can do without seeing them. I prefer to see the deer. Stay safe!

Wow! And here I am worrying about bears on our upcoming camping trip. Glad I'm not dealing with them in my back yard!

We've seen them at our cottage. But in the backyard where the kids play is definitely NOT where you want to see them! Hopefully that is a one-time thing for you!

Oh my, a bear too. Sure beats the stray cats we have in our yard from time to time!
